100 Textile Things

MASTERS DEGREE SHOW 2018 at Cardiff School of Art & Design, United Kingdom

What is a surface?

Things we call surfaces are all around us, so why do we feel the need to decorate them?
 Is the original surface inadequate?

What do these additional layers represent?

If the answer cannot be found, why was a thing called surface pattern design developed?

100 Textile Things doesn’t aim to define the purpose of applied surface design but to create textiles for the sake of creating textiles. The project explores and experiments with both new and old design techniques, displayed together to be taken for what they are without seeking the validation of ‘deeper’ meanings.

Meanings change over time and change from one observer to another, so prescribing the meaning of made applied surfaces isn’t necessary and may even be hindering the true personal interpretation of made applied surfaces by observers. In a way not giving it a meaning gives it more room for all kinds of different interpretations, including the one that it actually doesn’t have a meaning, just ‘looks good to some people’ for no specific reason.
